Cooking Camp with Zachary Bernstein – Monday, July 14 – Friday, July 18

We can stand the heat, and we will be in the kitchen! We’re going to cook and bake a variety of foods and then eat the food that we prepare.

Each day of Cooking Camp will have a different theme. We will focus on foods from various places and learn to cook them. Here’s a little sampler. Pizza and lasagna! Pita and Hummus! Mac and cheese! More and more! As we prepare some of our favorite foods, we will learn the fundamentals of cooking and baking. Chopping and knife safety. Measuring and mixing. Planning lists of ingredients. Following the steps of a recipe. Setting up the kitchen to make the cooking process go smoothly. Even cleaning the dishes and utensils!

We will also fill our days engaging in various activities, many of which will relate to our theme of the day. Of course, we will enjoy time outside in the summer sun!

SportsPlay Camp by Kidokinetics – Monday, July 28 – Friday, August 1

SportsPlay Camp by Kidokinetics provides an unforgettable experience! This camp is a playful introduction to multiple sports where kids can have fun and play in a non-competitive environment. New sports and activities are introduced daily, which will keep campers busy and engaged the entire week. Each day of camp includes a combination of interactive warm ups, introduction to a sport through a variety of skills and drills, highly active games and activities, on demand chill time with independent crafts, a cool down, and a recap of the many daily accomplishments. We will provide enough water breaks and snack time to ensure your child stays energized and hydrated. No experience required, all skills welcome!

Hebrew Immersion Art Camp with Amichay Findling and ShinShinim – Monday, August 4 – Friday, August 8

The Hebrew Immersion Art camp will be a weeklong experience of deep and meaningful immersion into the Hebrew language and Israeli culture, complete with native Hebrew speaking educators, curriculum that will expose the campers to essentials of Israeli Art, Culture and History, all through hands-on and experiential activities. Through the intentional choice of artists and styles, the children will learn about Israeli history and various cultural expressions: from traditional crafts formed in early 20th century Jerusalem by the founders of “Betzalel Academy of Art,” through avant-garde DaDa artists of the mid-20th century, to strolling between the “beach” and the café in contemporary Tel Aviv. Among the artistic activities the children will experience are painting, collage, and copper-foil relief making. Among the experiential activities, you will find Israeli food making, Israeli outdoor games, and a “Tel Aviv Beach” experience.

Together with Amichay, one of the Ann Arbor ShinShinim, Israeli year-of-service volunteers, will assist in leading the camp. The ShinShinim are young and energetic non-formal educators, experienced counselors from Israeli youth movements, and talented musicians. They will contribute their “Israeli Tzofim (scouts)” experience and music and dance activities. Among the artistic activities the children will experience are painting, collage, and copper-foil relief making.

Short Playwriting with Zachary Bernstein – Monday, August 11 – Friday, August 15

Let’s write a play! Around 90 years ago a skinny Jewish kid came from New York to Ann Arbor. As a student at the University of Michigan, he began writing plays. “The magical force of making marks on piece of paper and reaching into another human being, making them see what I had seen and feel my feelings—I had made a new shadow on the earth,” he said. Well, if Arthur Miller can learn to write plays in Ann Arbor, so can we!

During the week, we will create a short play. We will begin with a blank piece of paper and make some marks on it. Then we’ll read it aloud and make more marks. Then we’ll read it aloud again, make more marks, practice performing it, make more marks, and then perform it! By the end of the week, we will cast some new shadows upon the earth!
