7th Annual One Candle for Tzedakah

Tue December 10 @ 5:45 pm - 7:30 pm

Event Navigation

An evening celebrating Chanukah and the Jewish value of Tzedakah.

Even though Chanukah does not officially begin until late December (first candle is lit the evening of 12/22/2019) our community continues the tradition of saving one night for Tzedakah – the value of social justice through sharing of wealth. For this night, participants agree to give instead of receive.  This year, our celebration will be held before Chanukah arrives. Join us for One Candle for Tzedakah on Tuesday, December 10, 2019, when we will celebrate the Jewish Festival of Lights by giving to those in need. As always, we will enjoy a Chanukah themed meal, games, and crafts. This year’s activities will be connected with our Tzedakah project.

For this year’s Tzedakah project, the Ann Arbor JCC is proud to announce a new partnership with C. S. Mott Children’s Hospital. To see a list of items from the Mott wish-list, check the bottom of the page. Please purchase new items from this list at whatever price point you feel comfortable, then bring them to the J to donate them to children who must, sadly, spend their holidays in the hospital. We will also have extra bears from the Bear Factory available for purchase at the event to place within the donation pile too. Mott uses these donations to set up a “store” right in the hospital, where the families of their patients can “shop” for holiday gifts for their children, since these families often do not have the time, energy, or funds for usual holiday shopping trips.  For information from the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, feel free to view the info listed on their website here.

Donations will be collected December 1 – 10, 2019 at the J. You do not need to attend the One Candle program to participate in this wonderful tzedakah project – simply deliver your donated items by the evening of December 10, 2019.

Activities of the Evening:

Thanks to the generosity of The Bear Factory, children under 18 will be able to choose and stuff their own stuffed animal toy so we can “make our own patients” to care for. Each toy comes with its own birth certificate. (Stuffed animal toys will be available for purchase by those 18 and over). Once complete, each new toy can then be taken around the stations at the Teddy Bear Clinic for check-ups by real health care professionals who will be donating their time. The Teddy Bear Clinic is a joint project of Michigan Medicine, the Office of Patient Experience, and Ann Arbor Hands On Museum to teach children and families about wellness and medical care.

There will also be other Chanukah themed fun. For those ages 8 and up, adults included, PJ Our Way will present Donut “Wars” – a competition to see who can create the best looking donut based on Chanukah themes. There will be two rounds, one at 6pm and one at 7pm, lasting about half an hour each. All materials will be provided.

The cost to participate remains the same as last year. Registration links will be available shortly:

Individuals: $12
Households:  $30
